American Express Travel Guide

Average review score:

Rewritten/republished as Travel&Leisure:AmsterdamThe American Express Travel Guide of Amsterdam (1992), written by Derek Blythe, has been re-written by Carol Winkelman and re-published as Travel&Leisure: Amsterdam (1997). Travel&Leisure magazine, in conjunction with Macmillan Travel, designed this new version of the book for a larger audience that includes young travelers, budget travelers, babyboomer travelers, discriminating travelers, and business travelers. The new book is a combination of traditional and offbeat travel guide, helping the reader find his/her way to hotels, restaurants, museums, and historical sites while also taking him/her "inside" Amsterdam to experience its cafe culture, lively arts scene, and famous nightlife. The new book, like The American Express Guide, includes an excursion to Rotterdam that leads the reader from the historic to the ultramodern.

Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists Who Came to America Before 1700
Published in Hardcover by Genealogical Publishing Company (December, 1992)
Average review score:

A true classic in the subjectFirst published in 1950, Weis improves with each new edition; they're now up to the 7th. "Bad" lines are excised completely each time, the lengthy text-notes are very useful, and extensive citations appear for almost every entry. There's hardly a noble family in Europe west of the Dnieper River that does not appear in this book. Dr. Weis died in 1966 and Walter Lee Sheppard, himself a renowned genealogist, undertook (successfully) to main-tain his high standards; the 4th and subsequent editions have been the result of his own editorial labors. A very inexpensive work, especially compared to many of the other titles on this subject; this one should be on every genealogist's bookshelf.

Anti-Semitism: Myth and Hate from Antiquity to the Present
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (01 December, 2002)
Average review score:

An informative survey and analysis of anti-Semitic mythsCollaboratively researched and written by historian Marvin Perry and Frederick M. Schweitzer (Director of the Manhattan College Holocaust Resource Center), Antisemitism: Myth And Hate From Antiquity To The Present is an extensive and informative survey and analysis of anti-Semitic myths that have been perpetrated for generations, and which range from Biblical times down to the twentieth century and into the present day. Antisemitism reveals how these lies, exaggerations, untruths, and cultural myths about Jewish people have been used for centuries to justify and fuel unspeakable brutality and genocidal murder against an entire race and faith. A scholarly study of hate-based, mind-twisting perversions and lies from the fabricated stories of Jews ritually sacrificing Christian children to modern-day Holocaust denials, Antisemitism should be found upon the Judaic Studies shelves of every college and community library in the country.

Average review score:

Aquinas is an excellent introduction to Thomas's thought.Father Copleston's book is an excellent introduction to the philosophy of St. Thomas. A man of great intellectual depth, Copleston's lucid style makes Aquinas good reading for both academic study and personal philosophical/spiritual enjoyment.

Art Marketing Handbook: Marketing Art in the Nineties
Published in Hardcover by Gee Tee Bee (September, 1991)
Average review score:

A one book library!!I have read (and own) several art marketing books and this is by far the best one yet. It is very complete in every aspect of art marketing. The table of contents alone it 7 pages long!!
Goodman starts out discussing the psychology of art collectors and how to get to understand them. This alone is worth the price of the book! Imagine knowing how to think like a buyer!! From there is covers how to promote the art, creating a marketing plan, how to design a gallery, pricing, ethics, contracts hiring and training gallery employees etc.
The only problem- if you want to call it that- is that it reads like a text book an takes a little time going through, but the reading is easy, unlike most text books.
This is a must have for gallery owners, artists, art reps and anyone interested in making a living in the arts.

The art of coarse cruising
Published in Unknown Binding by Hutchinson ()
Average review score:

Sailing de-bunked !This is by far the best book about sailing I have ever come across. It is witty - very witty! It is also full of excellent and very useful advice to tyro sailors.I have been sailing for over 20 years and I still roar with laughter when reminded of the vital importance of finding thje "garden shed, conspic", a piece of information found on many a chart, but which has fooled many generations of sailors. It is also excellent on the characterisation of sailing 'types' - they are all here.the cowqardly, the falsely brave, the idiot, the philanderer, etc. Heartily commended. Should never be out of print. GAP
Vol 1: Adelaide-Lotus: ISBN: 0486251152
Vol 2: Malay-Young Mechanic: ISBN: 0486251160
Volume 1 covers all American Clipper Ships built from 1833-1858 whose names begin with the letters A through L, and Volume 2 covers from M through Y. I don't know why they are offered separately, as Volume 1 also contains the introduction and Volume 2 the Index, so it makes no sense to purchase these separately. Also the pagination is consecutive. The brief introduction explains the criteria used to define a Clipper Ship, which is a ship "...of peculiar construction, designed for great speed rather than for capacity." (p.v) The authors Octavius T. Howe and Frederick C. Matthews consider the "Ann McKim" launched at Baltimore in 1833 to be the first Clipper, and the era of the Clipper to be over by 1858 with the launching of "The Star of Peace" at Newburyport. The books are basically listings of all 352 known Clipper Ships arranged alphabetically. Some entries are brief; others however are quite lengthy and include excerpts of contemporary descriptions in the Press and in Correspondence. It seems that the Sailing Records of Ships were of great interest to the authors, so the records of the fastest voyages on several routes can be found in these books. The Index includes not only the names of Ships, but also of Captains, Owners and Builders. Also included are reproductions of about 100 paintings and some drawings. These have not fared so well in the reprint edition, and their quality is sometimes not so good, but many are still helpful. This almost 800 page long book can be used as a reference book, or as a book just to page around. Original editions are quite hard to come by and expensive, so this reprint edition is very reasonably priced and a welcome addition to any Bookshelf of Maritime History.
